AWS Falls Behind Microsoft and Google In Cloud AI Development

Cloud Artificial Intelligence (AI) developer services, according to Gartner, are cloud-hosted services/models that enable development teams to use AI models through APIs without requiring deep data science knowledge. These hosted models include services that include language, vision, and automated machine learning capabilities. However, the former leader Amazon Web Services (AWS) has fallen behind rivals Microsoft, Google, and IBM in Gartner’s new Magic Quadrant study on Cloud AI developer services.

In fast-growing markets, the Gartner Magic Quadrant research approach offers a graphical competitive positioning of four types of technology providers: Leaders, Visionaries, Niche Players, and Challengers. Gartner Critical Skills comments, which are part of the companion study, offer a deeper look into the functionality and suitability of providers’ IT products and services based on unique or tailored use cases.

AWS, along with Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, and IBM, is squarely in the Leaders segment this year, as it has been in previous years.

While AWS led on both the Ability to Execute and the Completeness of Vision axes in the 2020 survey, in 2021 the cloud giant trails Microsoft and Google on the former and all three other vendors on the latter.

Analysts claim that the introduction of AI and machine learning (ML) has altered the position of developers in a number of ways, including the ability to use AI/ML models to classify data, forecast patterns, assess risks, automate processes, and more. Developers may use machine learning models to improve existing applications or build new categories of applications by adding features or automating previously manual processes.

Developers will increasingly integrate AI/ML models into applications, according to the study, to:

  • Build conversational agents.
  • Unstructured text or image assets may be used to extract information or to add metadata.
  • Create machine learning models that predict and recommend the best next steps.

Vendors who are protected usually have licensed-for-distribution copies of Magic Quadrant reports, which are easily found with a fast Web search. It’s worth noting that Gartner’s market outlook is centered on the technology’s potential transformational capabilities to support consumers, rather than on the existing market.
