Service Workbench — New AWS Solutions Implementation
AWS Service Workbench is a new implementation of AWS Solutions is a web frontend that simplifies the process of standing up computer instances and central data collaboration for users who need quick access to these technologies without having to use the AWS Console to stand up to them.
It allows IT teams to ensure stable, repeatable, and federated control of access to the data, resources, and computing power that researchers need. Researchers no longer have to think about configuring and maintaining the cloud infrastructure with the Service Workbench on AWS.
It is an abstraction layer on top of standard AWS services that, by using AWS CloudFormation models, automates several steps needed for these tasks. This saves a lot of time for research users to stand up in these environments. They will be able to concentrate on fulfilling research missions and completing important work in minutes It also helps central administrators to create stable models to avoid the possibility of data breaches.
Researchers can use the AWS Service Workbench to help research environments easily and safely and exchange data with colleagues within and across institutions. Researchers and IT departments save time and achieve research reproducibility by automating the development of baseline research environments, simplifying data access, and providing cost transparency.
The solution utilizes an environment with default settings, which offers the Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) hosted website of the solution, made accessible via Amazon CloudFront. Amazon Cognito is authenticated by the web portal and uses Amazon API Gateway to invoke the serverless back-end solution (AWS Lambda functions and AWS Step Functions).
In Amazon S3, the Service Workbench on AWS currently stores data in a bucket it manages. In the future, to facilitate the use of research data in existing S3 buckets, the system will support the right to use S3 buckets that are owned and operated by other accounts as well.
