Toyota Plans to Build a City in Japan with A Single Operating System That Includes Robotics and AI Technology in Future

Toyota has begun construction on a 175-acre smart city in Japan, which will be used as a “living laboratory” for artificial intelligence and future technologies. Also, the functionality of this smart city includes robot and AI technology and will be completely controlled by a single operating system.

“The Woven City project officially starts today,” said President Toyoda. “Taking action as one has decided is never an easy task. I must express my deepest gratitude to all who have provided their whole-hearted support and cooperation to the project through today. The unwavering themes of the Woven City are ‘human-centered,’ ‘a living laboratory’ and ‘ever-evolving.’ Together with the support of our project partners, we will take on the challenge of creating a future where people of diverse backgrounds are able to live happily.”

Construction began on last week of February on a project called the “Woven City” at the foot of Mount Fuji in Japan, about 62 miles from Tokyo, where the city is designed for urban environments, including robotics, interconnected smart homes and artificial intelligence (AI). As a testing ground for technologies that can be transmitted through.

“Building a complete city from the ground up, even on a small scale like this, is a unique opportunity to develop future technologies, including a digital operating system for the city’s infrastructure,” Mr Toyoda said in a statement.

On the ground level, Woven City will have three types of streets, one dedicated to automated driving, one to pedestrians, and one to pedestrians with personal mobility vehicles. A single underground road will be used to transport goods.

The community will begin with approximately 360 residents, primarily senior citizens, families with small children, and inventors, and will eventually grow to over 2,000 people, including Toyota employees. Woven City’s infrastructure aims to build an ecosystem where technologies with the potential to solve societal problems can be developed quickly.

People, houses, and vehicles will all be connected and communicating with one another through data and sensors, according to Mr. Yoshida, enabling them to test connected AI technology in both the virtual and physical worlds, exploiting its potential.
